The Plant Native is hiring a part-time freelance Website Coordinator to help us publish native plant content, keep our website organized, and help expand our beginner-friendly online library.
This is a hands-on role for someone who’s equal parts: sharp writer, organized operator, and plant-literate human. You do not need to know every Latin name. You do need to understand how to talk about plants accurately, without making beginners feel like they’re back in school.
Role details
- Freelance (1099) role
- Hours: 15-20 hours/week
- Pay: $23/hour
- Location: Remote
- Timezone: Prefer overlap with Eastern Time
- Start: As soon as we find the right person
This role is 95% asynchronous (meaning you complete the work when you’d like) with one weekly 1-hour Zoom meeting. The ideal person can work independently and provide consistent digital updates. (I have a day job, so besides this weekly Zoom meeting, communication is mostly done via email, G Suite, and Slack.)
About The Plant Native
The Plant Native is a beginner-friendly platform that makes native planting feel doable (and fun). We focus on clear guidance for busy homeowners: what to plant where, what to avoid, what to expect through the seasons, and how to build a yard that supports real life. The Plant Native is independently owned; learn more about the mission and the founder.
To hear the voice/tone of the brand, visit our Native Plant Profiles, Guides, and FAQs.
What you’ll do:
Website Content Updates (WordPress + Elementor)
- Upload, format, and publish content in WordPress and Elementor (headings, spacing, images, links) from provided Google Docs
- Create and maintain internal links between related pages
- Add alt text, check mobile formatting, and catch broken links before anything goes live
- Keep categories/tags and page layouts consistent using our templates
- Use Google Docs and Google Sheets to stay organized, but work independently
Website Copy Support (Drafting + Editing)
- Draft short website sections from outlines and source notes (intros, FAQs, blurbs, resource pages)
- Rewrite long-form copy into reusable modules (quick takeaways, “yes, if…”, planting ideas, common issues)
- If you’re interested in writing more, there are opportunities to contribute more to the website content
You’re a good fit if you
- Have plant experience or plant adjacency: gardening experience, nursery work, ecology/horticulture coursework, environmental education, field research, botany hobbyist, or similar
- Can write clearly and keep beginner readers in mind
- Catch details other people miss (formatting, links, consistency, non-Oxford commas, weird spacing)
- Can follow a system and improve it as you go
- Can work independently and communicate progress reliably
Nice to have
- WordPress and Elementor experience
- Basic SEO comfort (titles, meta descriptions, internal linking, image alt text)
- Photoshop skills (light image resizing, nothing fancy)
- Comfort reading and summarizing sources (extension sites, botanical gardens, peer-reviewed articles when needed)
How to apply
In an email, please send:
- A short note (5–10 sentences) on why this role fits you, and your experience with plants.
- 2–5 writing samples (short article, past essay, social post, or anything that shows a brand voice in action).
- Which state you live in, and your favorite native plant.
- Links or screenshots of web work, if you have them (optional, but helpful).
